The course is designed to strengthen the students’ ability to analyse and discuss ancient philosophical texts.
Training on the analysis of the argumentative styles which are proper to ancient philosophical texts and skill development related to the ability to grasp various theoretical implications of these arguments and to discuss their philosophical validity and effectiveness.
Skill development related to the production of an autonomous interpretation of a text and to defend it through focused argumentation.

Il libro Lambda della Metafisica di Aristotele: la teoria della sostanza e la causalità del primo motore immobile
Come noto, la forma sistematica in cui la Metafisica di Aristotele ci è pervenuta è il frutto del lavoro editoriale del Peripato. Vi è tuttavia un libro dell’opera che dà la possibilità di considerare diversi aspetti cruciali della filosofia di Aristotele e aggiunge ad essi l’unica ampia discussione “teologica” presente nel corpus: si tratta del libro Lambda. In esso, in effetti, si concentrano elementi di ontologia aristotelica, legati in particolare alla teoria della sostanza, una fondamentale discussione della nozione di causa, e la famosa dottrina del primo Motore Immobile come causa del movimento del cosmo. L’insegnamento è concepito come una lettura completa e sistematica dell’intero libro, con particolare attenzione per la sua struttura argomentativa; ciò sarà precedento da alcune lezioni introduttive dedicate ad alcuni passi rilevanti dei libri precedenti (in particolare A, Γ, Ε, Ζ, Θ).
Aristotle’s Metaphysics Lambda: the theory of substance and the causation of the first unmoved mover
As is well known, the systematic form in which Aristotle's Metaphysics has reached us is the result of the editorial work of the Peripatos. There is, however, a book of the work that gives us the possibility to consider several crucial aspects of Aristotle's philosophy and adds to them the only extensive "theological" discussion occurring in the corpus: it is the book Lambda. Indeed, this book concentrates elements of Aristotelian ontology, linked in particular to the theory of substance, a fundamental discussion of the notion of cause, and the famous doctrine of the Unmovable Mover as the cause of the motion of the cosmos. The course is conceived as a complete and systematic reading of the entire book (after some introductory lectures devoted to important passages taken from other books, namely A, Γ, Ε, Ζ, Θ).

Modalità di insegnamento
L'insegnamento è impartito in 36 ore complessive, pari a 6 crediti. Dopo alcune lezioni introduttive, ogni lezione sarà dedicata all'analisi comune di una breve sezione del libro Lambda, lasciando in prima battuta spazio alle interpretazioni delle studentesse e degli studenti. Attraverso un confronto tra le letture proposte, sarà possibile indirizzare la classe da un lato verso l'applicazione di un metodo di ricerca e dibattito rigoroso, dall'altro verso l'elaborazione di letture autonome sul testo antico.
The course is given in 36 total hours, equal to 6 credits. After some introductory lectures, each lesson will be dedicated to a common analysis of a short section of Metaphysics Lambda, leaving space for students' interpretations. Through a comparison between the proposed readings, it will be possible to direct the class towards the application of a rigorous method of research and debate, and towards the elaboration of autonomous readings on the ancient text.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
La modalità d'esame è orale. Le studentesse e gli studenti riceveranno domande generali relative al testo oggetto dell'insegnamento nel quadro della filosofia aristotelica, domande mirate su aspetti del testo, e sarà loro richiesto di leggere un brano tra quelli considerati in classe e di discuterlo criticamente con il docente.
The mode of examination is oral. Students will receive general questions related to the text being taught within the framework of Aristotle's philosophy, focused questions on aspects of the text, and will be asked to read one passage from those considered in class and critically discuss it with the teacher.

Il docente si renderà disponibile a svolgere, fuori dall’orario di ricevimento, attività di tutorato con piccoli gruppi di studenti, per assicurare la possibilità di preparare al meglio l’esame, chiarire eventuali elementi di difficoltà nell’approccio alla disciplina, o approfondire aspetti di particolare interesse.
It will be possible for small groups of students to benefit from tutorials (out of office hours), in which they will be offered the possibility to ameliorate their studying methods, to clarify possible difficult topics, and to deepen their acquaintance with aspects of particular interest.

The Greek text will be referred to in the course of the lectures, but knowledge of ancient Greek is not a prerequisite either for attendance or for passing the exam.
